Easily Add Wireless Connectivity

Communications is the backbone of the global smart grid and Microchip Technology offers three mainstream communications technologies used for products in the home area network (HAN), connecting the meter to the utility’s data collection point or creating a proprietary network.

A major challenge in the energy market is the variety of communication and security requirements from region to region. Wireless isn’t one size fits all so Microchip offers standalone radio solutions for IEEE 802.15.4 and 802.11 (WiFi®) as well as Sub-GHz that can be connected to the microcontroller of choice.

  • Agency certified modules – No need to be an RF expert or invest in ground-up certification as modules have completed FCC (USA), IC (Canada), and ETSI (Europe) certifications
  • Industry standard networking software available for ZigBee® Smart Energy Profile and TCP/IP (WiFi) speeds development
  • Light-weight MiWi™ protocol software for mesh and P2P networks
  • 802.15.4 and sub-GHz available as standalone ICs for maximum space and cost optimization

  • Modules offer a variety of power gains from +0 to +20 dBm and some with external antenna connection
  • Simple 4-wire SPI interface to MCU
  • 434/868/915/955 MHz transceivers
  • 2.4 GHz transceivers for 802.15.4 and 802.11
  • Surface mountable modules

  • Sub-GHz transceivers are available now in 32-pin TQFN or 18×28 mm module
  • 802.15.4 transceivers available now in 40-pin 6×6 mm ^2 QFN or 18×28 mm module
  • 802.11 modules available now in a 21×31 mm module
  • TCP/IP and MiWi available via free download from Microchip’s website
